It's been quite awhile since I've updated this thing since I was too busy updating my facebook status like it was twitter. Twitter, by the way, I just don't get. Can't get caught into something that requires me to log into anything anymore. Too many keys in my key chain now a days.
Maybe more than a month has gone by and since today is probably the third Saturday I've had that I'm trying to enjoy an actual weekend day (I work six days a week by the way...) I thought it would be nice to write something in here to do some over due updating.
Take heed. It's going to be a long one.
I'm finally done with painting. Well, not quite. But it feels like it. I just have one 4x4ft painting I'm trying to finish. All it needs is an exclamation point and that part I'm still figuring out what that is. It'll come. I'm sending off all the paintings this Monday to my gallery so I imagine finishing the piece by tomorrow (the latest). I honestly think I almost burnt myself out with this year's exhibition and project schedule. Two solo shows that are a month apart and projects in between was just too much. Never again. Painting becomes too painful to do when your not into it. Can't force creativity and be on a schedule...
To try and find new creative energy I've been doing fun things in between:
- random dinners after work (and I wonder where my money goes...)
- having a hit and a bottle when I'm home (not everyday tho, AHAHAH!)
- reading the New York Post every morning
- watching No Doubt @ Jones Beach with Mel
- hitting Red Hook
- buying new curtains from Ikea
- joining Netflix
- brunch (FINALLY! i miss not working Sundays)
- Peking Duck and Younger Than Jesus (got robbed off $12 on this one, most irritating show I've seen in a while) with Karla
- Yinka Shonibare @ The Brooklyn Museum (need to be back for round 2, then 3)
- free Fridays @ the MoMA (current drawing show and James Ensor is quite nice)
- figuring out how to do a bow tie
- working on the windows at work have been extra fun lately
I still have a long list of things I want to do before the summer ends.
- The Bronx Zoo
- picnics
- Governor's Island (mini golf and ride a bike)
- visit a beer garden or two
- Coney Island
- Brooklyn Botanical Garden
- get back to running (this I doubt, sigh)
New York has been having a weird summer lately. Lots of rain (boo!) and nice windy afternoons (yay!). The temperature is always extreme and it swings from one day to the next. Even before I know it summer is going to be over and I'll be starting with school already!!!
First day of classes is on the 31st of August. I've already registered for my classes and am very very both excited and eager with this whole graduate program I'm taking at Pratt. My only worry is the loan I'm applying for. Still not sure if I got it or not but every time I've spoken to my school's financial aid office they always say that I've already done everything and not need to worry about it and just show up for class. Ayyayyay. This paranoia will never end not until I'm already IN school. Sigh. What if I show up and they say, "Oh, sorry you'r loan wasn't approved!". I'ld be so fucked over when that happens.
Paranoia aside, been gearing up to get ready for school. I was given a book list that every incoming graduate student should've read prior to starting the program at Pratt. There are four books (thank you Amazon) and I've only started to read the first one. The other three would have to gather dust on my bookshelf for now. First book is Arthur Danto's "Madonna of the Future", a collection of essays on modern/contemporary art by the famed art critic. It's an interesting read but sometimes I find myself reading the sentences over and over just to make sure I understand what he's talking about.
Also have been writing a lot about ideas and other things I want to pursue with my practice once I start the program. I'ld like to bring my work to the next level and not just be an improvement. Theres a lot of possibilities with the direction I would like to take on but some how some elements in my work tend to creat walls. I'm not worried about them as I'm sure I'll be able to think of something (also known as to bullshit my way out of it, ha!). In the mean time I'm soaking up my self with as much exposure to new things as possible. Deciding the best way to express my ideas would have to come later.
Alright, enough writing. Need to make beef curry, watch Bottle Shock and head into the city for some window shopping (fingers crossed) and meeting up with Karla later in the afternoon to hang around.
Later!
