I just came back from Philadelphia yesterday to check out the
Frida Kahlo exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. To say it was amazing would be an understatement. The exhibition comprises of works spanning the painting years of Kahlo alongside with photographs from her personal collection (never been shown to the public).
Frida Kahlo
Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird
(Autorretrato con collar de espinas y colibrí), 1940 I've always admired her work. Her surreal sensibilities are paired with a self-taught way of painting, this pairing amazes me. It was such a treat to have viewed the exhibition. I now have this new energy to work on my own paintings. The somewhat painful bus ride to Philadelphia was worth it (about 1.5 hours... it wasn't the time, but the ride itself...).
The museum had a pretty impressive collection of Duchamps they said but I was pretty disappointed not to see any Duchamp in sight. I think they might have moved it some where or it was on loan. Maybe it was in storage to make room for the Gilbert&George exhibition (which opens in May) that they were installing.
Anyway, photos.
Philadelphia is a weird city. I guess I'm just used to the hustle and bustle of NY. I wondered where were all the people. For a Tuesday morning there wasn't much there. Some areas were nice and busy and some were just plain drab. When we got back to NY I wanted to kiss the ground. I don't think I'm made to live any where else but NY...

Cherry blossoms were in bloom!

We found this very green fountain in "Love Park" (They had a huge LOVE sculpture like the one in Midtown). I want to know why the water was Jell-O green.

Near the foot of the steps at the Museum was a huge statue of Rocky. Keith tells me they filmed the famous "Rocky running up and down the steps" there.

Rocky steps!

"No Swimming" in the empty fountain.

View...

Yay!

Bigger YAY! We were that hungry after seeing the exhibition: roast beef on bun, split-pea soup, potato chips, raisin cookie, dinner roll and Pepsi...

The coolest S+P shakers I've seen... I wanted to steal them.

My five day vacation is over... back to my daily grind I go. Next: Boston.
